CAN GOOD MANAGERS ALSO BE GOOD LEADERS?

In all business courses and textbooks, we have come across the difference between leaders and managers. Managers focus on the protocols, organization of tasks and processes, while leaders promote vision, empowerment, innovation, and engagement. Very few managers are fortunate to be good at both, leading and managing their teams. Today, organizations are looking for managers with leadership qualities. However, the big question is: can good managers be effective leaders as well? This subject has been a debate for many years. Many authors and publications have stated that managers today should be leaders. This is because we have moved into an era where motivation, innovation, engagement, and empowerment are essential factors that drive personnel performance.

A manager’s role demands leadership skills at some point in his or her career especially when managing teams. It is possible for these managers to be effective leaders as leaders are not born with these skills. Yes, it may be true that personality traits and genetic qualities can easily contribute to leadership development. However, managers can be trained to gain leadership competencies over time. So while there are differences between leaders and managers, it is possible for managers to become effective leaders.

WINNING A PROPOSAL IS REVENUE FOR A BUSINESS

Today business is competitive. Writing compelling and well-articulated proposals will result in continuous revenue and retaining clients. Clients make a decision based on the strength of the proposal which is why the focus should be on solving the client’s problem and on how to effectively deliver a project, rather than just explaining the offer. Presenting the offer is not a bad approach, but it should show how it will benefit and provide value to the client.

Before attempting to write a proposal, the proposal team should understand the clients’ objectives and challenges of the project, brainstorm on the approach and strategy, and start to develop a solution with the right plan, people and pricing for the project. You have to convince the clients that the solution presented will be the perfect approach for their project’s short-term and long-term goals, but aside from this, the client is looking to see if the proposed team is committed and capable of handling the project.

Proposals should provide a solution to the clients’ project goals, including being easy to read, well written, neatly structured and presentable.

IS BRANDING IMPORTANT?

Many companies benefit from branding such as General Motors, Apple, Google, Amazon, Dell, Coca Cola, Nike, and Toyota. It is impressive how these brands are so well known not just by their regular consumers, but also by the general public. These companies are doing something right. Their brand initiatives have been beneficial as today many people recognize their names and range of products.

Most of us know that a brand is considered an image or reputation of a firm. Customers prefer to buy or do business with a brand they know and trust. But there is more to the color, image, and symbol. The actual purpose of a brand is the promise made to a customer. A good example is FedEx that offers overnight delivery. When consumers want a package to reach overnight, they will instantly think of FedEx because that is the promise FedEx offers to their customers.

Companies that are known for their brand have been successful because they honor their promises. The promise, in turn, has contributed to their strong global presence. It is simple if companies do not deliver on their brand promise; they are missing the opportunity to develop a loyal customer base. Keep a brand promise, and everything else will follow such as sales, reputation, and profits!
